Council votes Tuesday on repealing the August wildlife-feeding ban and its $100 fine

A crowded Tuesday at City Hall, aerial mosquito spraying west of Military Trail and a Sunday morning car meet.

One neighbor's complaint about pigeon droppings turned into a citywide ban on feeding pigeons and other nuisance wildlife in August. Now the council may take it back, on a Tuesday that also brings votes on two eight-story projects.

The big story

The City Council banned feeding iguanas, rats, mice and pigeons in August. On Tuesday, Oct. 13, it will consider repealing that ban. The ordinance passed 3-2; Michelle Grau and Yvette Drucker cast the no votes. A separate resolution set a $100 fine per offense, and a companion measure would erase that fine too.

It all began with one neighbor dispute: a resident said pigeons fed next door left waste that damaged his property.

Councilmember Stacy Sipple, who voted for the ban, asked for the repeal. A City Manager's office memo says she has learned information since the vote that would change her vote, but it does not say what that information is. If everyone else votes as they did in August, the ban and the fine both go away.

So the open question for Tuesday is what Sipple learned. In August she had raised concerns about birdfeeders, which the ban left out. Drucker's objection in August still hangs over it: "We should not enact policy for one party or for neighborly fights."

Mayor gives Panthers captain Barkov the key to the city

Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov, a longtime Boca resident who chose the city over Fort Lauderdale, got the key to the city Thursday from Mayor Andy Thomson. About 200 people, council members among them, watched at Boca Ice. The Tampere, Finland, native is rehabbing a knee injury from an Oct. 1 game in San Jose that won't need surgery; coach Paul Maurice puts the optimistic return window at six to eight weeks. A $1 million gift from Barkov in February launched a youth sports medicine program at Hollywood's Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital. Thomson summed up the honor: "It means that Sasha is always welcome here."

County plans aerial mosquito spraying over Boca west of Military Trail Sunday evening

Palm Beach County Mosquito Control plans to spray from aircraft starting about 30 minutes after sunset on Sunday, Oct. 11, if the weather cooperates. The zone covers populated land west of Military Trail, about 265,000 acres countywide, and Boca Raton is on the county's list. The county says the flights respond to higher mosquito counts and the risk of diseases the insects spread.

If Sunday gets scrubbed, the county will keep trying each evening until a spray is done. The county's hotline, 561-642-8775, will say whether it went ahead.

Meanwhile, the county asks residents to dump or cut down standing water and to wear an EPA-registered repellent outdoors after dark.

Tuesday: CRA takes up The Sanborn, council weighs Park Tower at Broken Sound and is expected to set the 2027 election date

Tuesday, Oct. 13, is a big day for downtown and Broken Sound. At 10 a.m., the Boca Raton CRA takes up The Sanborn, an eight-story private club planned for 100 NE First Ave. with 54,681 square feet of space. The plan adds an 11,200-square-foot underground valet garage and would swap office development of 31,979 square feet for 40,453 square feet of retail.

The City Council follows at 10:30 a.m. with its own development vote. Park Tower at Broken Sound would bring a 97-unit, eight-story apartment building to 1075 and 1095 NW Broken Sound Parkway. Ten of the units would be affordable housing, and the roughly 185,219-square-foot plan adds a two-level garage plus a 2,100-square-foot shop or restaurant building.

Council members are also expected to set March 9, 2027, as the date of the regular city election. Anyone can attend at the 6500 Building or stream the meetings from the city's agenda page.
