Boca's second try at a police headquarters is smaller, and staff want it out of downtown

Plus a private club for Sanborn Square, applications for a council seat and Young Frankenstein at The Wick.

The city's second attempt at a new police headquarters is smaller and cheaper than the plan voters rejected in March, and staff want the main building near Spanish River Boulevard.

The big story

After voters turned down a $175 million police bond in March, the city is weighing two scaled-back plans tied to a bond of up to $125 million, Boca Post reported. Staff and the police department recommend a two-story, 70,000-square-foot headquarters on city land near Spanish River and Broken Sound boulevards, plus a 9,000-square-foot station downtown near NW 2nd Avenue and NW 2nd Street. The alternative is a six-story building, four floors of it parking, next to the current headquarters at 100 NW Boca Raton Blvd.

The city estimates a home with a $475,000 taxable value would pay about $93 a year. Actual costs would depend on taxable value, interest rates and the amount borrowed. No final site, design or funding plan has been approved. The city's timeline calls for council to consider ballot language in November for a possible March 2027 referendum.

An eight-story private club clears its first vote beside Sanborn Square

Boca's planning board unanimously approved Sanborn Tower, a 54,681-square-foot private social club planned for the northeast corner of NE 1st Avenue and E. Boca Raton Road, next to Sanborn Square, Boca Daily News reported. Plans include Formula 1 and golf simulators, a wine cellar, a speakeasy, a card room, Asian fusion and Italian restaurants, and a rooftop infinity pool with an open-air bar. Parking goes in a two-level underground automated garage.

The project seeks no variances. To limit parking demand, the city is requiring set closing hours for some club spaces, transit passes for on-site employees and $9,165 a year toward downtown transit. No objectors spoke at the meeting. City Council still has to approve it.

Friday is the deadline to weigh in on Boca's 2030 sustainability plan

The city's Office of Sustainability has drafted an update to its Sustainability Action Plan, setting measurable goals and proposed actions across nine focus areas through 2030. The update builds on the original 2019 plan and is designed to line up with the city's Resilience Adaptation Action Plan and its LEED for Cities framework.

Comments are due Friday, Oct. 9, through an online feedback form, and you can include your name or comment anonymously. The city has posted the full draft, a recorded webinar and the presentation slides alongside the form. The feedback will help inform the final plan that goes to City Council for adoption.

Boca is taking applications for City Council Seat C

The city's application page is accepting residents interested in an appointment to City Council Seat C, with a deadline of noon Friday, Oct. 30. Applicants must be at least 18, live within Boca Raton's city limits and be registered to vote in the city. The appointee would serve through March 31, 2027.

Interviews are scheduled for the special council meeting Nov. 9 at 6 p.m., followed by consideration of the appointment at the regular meeting Nov. 10 at 6 p.m. The opening follows Yvette Drucker's resignation to run for county clerk and comptroller. Council members had debated whether to appoint someone or leave the seat empty until the March election; the current city form now provides the application and interview schedule.
