A Piper lands in the ocean, and the pilot is rescued
Jimmy Buffett Day returns in Delray Aug. 28, North Park breaks ground Sept. 3, and downtown gets a new planning team.

On Saturday, Aug. 22, a Piper aircraft landed in the ocean near 250 South Ocean Boulevard after the pilot reported an electrical problem. Boca Raton Ocean Rescue assisted the pilot from the aircraft, and no injuries were reported. The plane had left Fort Myers for Bimini and was cleared for an emergency landing at Boca Raton Airport before continuing toward the ocean. Boca Raton Police and the U.S. Coast Guard assisted at the scene. The Federal Aviation Administration is leading the investigation.
Sixteen violations at Ben's, and the doors stayed open
Ben's Kosher Deli at 9942 Clint Moore Road, near Clint Moore and U.S. 441, received 16 health code violations across two inspections. The Aug. 20 inspection produced 13 violations, including high-priority findings involving handwashing, food separation, and food temperatures, along with intermediate and basic findings. The Aug. 21 follow-up listed three intermediate items from the first inspection: a missing sanitizer test kit, expired employee training, and a menu disclosure issue for raw or undercooked food. The restaurant was not ordered to close and faces another unannounced inspection.
Delray's Deck 84 brings back Jimmy Buffett Day

Deck 84 at 840 E. Atlantic Ave. in Delray Beach brings back its annual Jimmy Buffett tribute for a third year on Aug. 28. The Seven Mile Bridge band starts the live music at 2 p.m., and happy hour runs from 3 to 6. Specials include $6 house spirits, beers and seltzers, plus half-off signature cocktails and premium spirits. Parrot Punch and the Coconut Telegraph Margarita join the drink list. Wine-by-the-glass specials round out the bar menu during the event. The food menu adds a Paradise Cheeseburger, Sunset Sliders, and Coconut Shrimp and Chips. A portion of the day's proceeds will benefit Save the Manatee Club, the nonprofit Buffett founded to protect manatees and their habitats.
North Park's east side finally gets shovels

The Greater Boca Raton Beach and Park District breaks ground on the next phase of North Park on Thursday, Sept. 3, at 9:30 a.m. The ceremony will be at the corner of NW 2nd Avenue and Jeffrey Street, in the southeast parking lot near Boca Paddle. Butters Construction & Development will carry out the district's design for roughly 70 acres on the park's east side. Plans include more than five miles of walking and riding trails, a dog park, a playground, exercise equipment along some trails, and more than 1,000 native trees. North Park occupies the former Ocean Breeze golf course site in Boca Teeca.

The Walk of Recognition at Mizner Plaza is turning 30, and nominations are open through Sept. 15. The Boca Raton Historical Society uses granite stars to honor local changemakers in education, health care, civic service, arts, business, and philanthropy. Marta Batmasian started the tradition in 1997 and has sponsored it ever since. This year's recognition event is Nov. 4 at The Addison. Tickets are $125 through the Historical Society. A new planning team takes on the downtown campus
Boca Raton selected Chen Moore and Associates to create a new master plan for 17 acres of city-owned land around Memorial Park and City Hall. Council approved the Fort Lauderdale firm unanimously after voters rejected the prior redevelopment proposal in March. The company has worked on parks and downtown projects in Doral, West Palm Beach, and Lake Worth Beach. The city will now negotiate a contract with the consultant. If council approves that agreement, the firm will spend six months gathering community feedback before shaping the plan. No redesign is approved yet.
