Council weighs a $125M bond for new police facilities
The police complex discussion is moving into public outreach while the civic campus plan also advances.
At Tuesday's meeting, City Council reached consensus to keep exploring a bond referendum for new police facilities of up to $125 million, directing staff to move ahead with public outreach and project planning, according to the City of Boca Raton's latest council recap. The proposed Police Services Complex is still early-stage: staff walked through community engagement, polling, preliminary facility needs, and possible funding approaches. Expect to hear more as outreach begins and the city explains what the facilities would include.
The same recap said the Downtown Civic Area Plan also moved forward. That is the long-range effort to reimagine the City Hall campus and surrounding civic areas. Staff laid out an RFQ process and timeline for selecting a consultant, with community engagement, planning, and conceptual design to follow. A final master plan is anticipated in early 2027, so this is the beginning of a multi-year civic conversation rather than a finished blueprint.
Several other updates came out of the recap. Youth softball is set to move to Spanish River Athletic Complex at Countess de Hoernle Park beginning with the fall 2026 season. Council also passed Ordinance No. 5785, adding lobbyist certification and disclosure requirements for development applications, and introduced Ordinance No. 5786, which would extend a lease on about 5.12 acres of city-owned land at 1531 West Palmetto Park Road through June 12, 2044, for continued hospice operation.
Storm season prep starts now, city says
AlertBoca, Boca Raton Radio, and extra Clean & Cut pickups are the practical reminders.
With hurricane season at the door, the city is pushing residents to get ready while the weather is still quiet. Emergency Manager Manuel Rodriguez gives key reminders in a city video, and the Be Prepared Boca Hurricane Guide organizes preparation into three steps: make a plan, make a kit, and stay informed.
Two practical steps are easy to do this week. First, sign up for emergency alerts by texting AlertBoca, with no space, to 38276. Second, if a storm ever knocks out power and cell service, tune to Boca Raton Radio 1650AM, which the city says will carry emergency information. The city also says Boca Raton is the only StormReady-certified city in Palm Beach County.
Residents who want to ask questions in person can meet Rodriguez at the Summer Reading Kickoff Party on Saturday, June 6, from 9 a.m. to noon at Spanish River Library. The city is also extending Clean & Cut bulk and vegetation pickups through May and June at no extra charge, with schedules varying by route.
Magic in Mizner opens the summer series Saturday
Yarden Shalev performs in The Studio at Mizner Park's Club Room.
The Studio at Mizner Park and Comic Cure bring Magic in Mizner Park back Saturday, May 30, at 7 p.m. in the Club Room. The May show features Yarden Shalev, opening the venue's Summer of Magic series after earlier Magic in Mizner dates sold out. The practical detail is the room: this is an indoor Club Room show with limited seats, not a sprawling amphitheater night.
Two Gumbo Limbo programs share Saturday morning
Intro to Kayaking starts at 9 a.m.; Nature Connections follows at 11:30 a.m.
Gumbo Limbo has two family-friendly programs on Saturday, May 30. Intracoastal Adventures: Intro to Kayaking starts at 9 a.m. and is built for people who are not yet ready to confidently paddle the wild, winding mangrove trails. Adults and children ages 7 and up may participate, but a parent or guardian must register and paddle with minors. Each child under 13 needs an accompanying adult, and children under 13 may not paddle a single kayak.
Prefer to stay on land? Nature Connections follows at 11:30 a.m. The city describes it as a free weekend talk for getting in touch with the wild side of Florida. All ages are welcome, with a parent or guardian participating alongside minors.
A string quartet plays inside the museum galleries
Con Brio Quartet performs Sunday afternoon at the Boca Raton Museum of Art.
On Sunday afternoon, the Boca Raton Museum of Art hosts Music in the Museum: Con Brio Quartet - Art in Motion from 3 to 4 p.m. The event pairs chamber music with the museum setting, framing the afternoon around the meeting point of visual and sonic beauty.
The quartet members listed for the event are Valentin Mansurov and Marina Lenau on violins, David Pedraza on viola, and Aziz Sapaev on cello. Tickets include museum admission: $15 for member adults, $25 for non-member adults, and $20 for non-member seniors 65 and older.
Marcus King brings Darling Blue to the amphitheater
The Sunday show starts at 8 p.m., with doors at 7.
If you would rather close the weekend with a bigger stage, Marcus King Band: Darling Blue Tour Pt. 2 plays Mizner Park Amphitheater on Sunday, May 31, at 8 p.m. Doors open at 7. One logistics note before you pack: Ticketmaster says chairs are not permitted inside the venue, so plan around the amphitheater rules before heading out.
